FORESTFUTURE presents management scenarios for the future of Catalonia’s forests

23 September 2025

The October 30 event will showcase scientific results to anticipate how today’s management choices will shape forest resilience through 2100.

In a context marked by climate change, wildfires, and biodiversity loss, Catalonia’s forests are at a critical crossroads. How they are managed in the coming decades will determine their capacity to continue providing essential ecosystem services —such as clean water, timber, carbon sequestration, and recreation— and to remain resilient in the face of future environmental crises. Thus, FORESTFUTURE, developed jointly by the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC) and CREAF, offers a valuable scientific tool to anticipate scenarios and guide forest policies.

On October 30, the Administrative District (Barcelona) will host the project’s presentation day, The event will be inaugurated by Sonsoles Letang, Director General for Climate Change and Environmental Quality, followed by a keynote from Jordi Vayreda (CREAF) on the evolution of forest ecosystem services over the past 25 years. Next, Núria Aquilué (CTFC) and Miquel de Cáceres (CREAF) will present the project’s objectives, methodology, and simulation results through 2100, showing how different management strategies can affect biodiversity, water availability, timber production, and carbon sequestration.

After the break, a roundtable moderated by Leonardo Bejarano (Catalan Office for Climate Change) will bring together representatives from administration, research, and the third sector to discuss the future of Catalonia’s forests. The day will conclude with an open dialogue with the audience and Bejarano’s closing remarks, highlighting the project’s implications for the country’s forest and climate strategy.

The FORESTFUTURE – Management Scenarios project provides key scientific knowledge to guide forest policies and anticipate how today’s decisions will shape the future of Catalonia’s forests over the coming decades.
