The BoscAran project, focused on revitalizing forest management and advancing the green energy transition in the Val d’Aran, has reached its final stage after nearly two years of implementation.
The main objective of BoscAran has been to activate the bioeconomy of the Val d’Aran by promoting sustainable, innovative forest management adapted to the challenges of climate change. Its key objectives include:
• Revitalizing forest management through the oversight of the Forest Management Plan (PORF) and the development of four Forest Management Instruments (IOF).
• Certifying forest management under PEFC and CATFOREST standards.
• Developing logistical solutions for the use of aboveground biomass, including aerial cable systems.
• Providing technical training to local stakeholders and facilitating knowledge transfer.
• Promoting district heating networks and the use of local timber in construction, fostering the green energy transition.
Significant progress was achieved during the project’s implementation:
• Development of four IOFs incorporating sustainability and forest multifunctionality criteria.
• Pilot actions for timber extraction using aerial cable systems in hard-to-access areas, demonstrating their technical and environmental feasibility.
• Promotion of PEFC and CATFOREST forest certification, strengthening traceability and added value for local products.
• Specialized training for municipal technicians, forest managers, and local companies in silviculture, logistics, and bioenergy.
• Design of biomass-based district heating networks, including technical and economic feasibility studies and the drafting of an executive project.
• Validation of the model in other contexts, such as Bonansa, applying adaptive approaches and differentiated strategies.

These actions have laid the groundwork for active, sustainable forest management that generates local value and is aligned with the objectives of the European Green Deal and climate neutrality by 2050.
The project was funded by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), with funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
