The event brought together young researchers to foster collaboration and address the challenges of forest management and sustainability.
On October 17 and 18, 2024, the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC) hosted 40 researchers in forest ecology and management for the celebration of the 5th Research School in Forest Ecology and Management. The initiative, organized by PhD students of the CTFC-Agrotecnio Joint Research Unit (JRU), aimed to improve the presentation skills of PhD students, by facilitating the discussion of their results in an academic environment. For the first time, postdoctoral researchers also participated in the conference.
Roser Maneja, deputy research director at the CTFC, welcomed the participants before giving way to scientific presentations, workshops on synergies between research groups, and group dynamics. During the conference, the researchers had the opportunity to present their work in areas such as forest management, forest health, ecosystem dynamics, and soil function, among other topics.
One of the highlights of the school was the debate on the role of artificial intelligence in scientific research, where both its potential to accelerate data analysis and the ethical challenges posed by this technology were discussed.
In addition to the academic activities, the meeting included moments of conviviality, with shared meals that facilitated the informal exchange of ideas and the development of new collaborations. For the attendees, the main conclusion of the Research School is the importance of addressing environmental challenges with an interdisciplinary approach.
The CTFC-Agrotecnio JRU was constituted in 2019, with the aim of conducting common projects on the management of Mediterranean forests and the environmental threats that affect them. CTFC and Agrotecnio are two CERCA centers of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
