RES-MAB advances climate resilience research in Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves

16 January 2026

The project researchers explore the Mont-Ventoux Biosphere Reserve (France) as a “living laboratory” to analyze how socio-ecological heritage and traditional agroforestry practices contribute to the WEFE (Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems) Nexus approach.

The RES-MAB project, which aims to address climate-change challenges in the Mediterranean, recently concluded a key fieldwork collaboration in Mont-Ventoux. This site is one of the project’s seven “living laboratories” where innovative solutions for landscape resilience are tested and implemented through an integrated nexus strategy.

The research stage, conducted by Esteve Viñals from the CTFC, focused on Mediterranean cultural landscapes, analyzing socio-ecological heritage, cultural ecosystem services, and traditional agroforestry practices to determine their role in territorial adaptation to climate change.

The fieldwork involved in-depth interviews with local stakeholders, including landowners, agroforestry managers, and specialized expert institutions. This participatory approach is fundamental to RES-MAB’s goal of co-creating climate-resilient solutions and empowering local communities through informed decision-making.

By integrating these territorial data into the project’s WEFE-SEM Tool, RES-MAB contributes to the balance between human activity and nature conservation across UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserves.
